Jeremiah 1:4-5

This verse was spoken by the Lord through the tongue of the Prophet Jeremiah, and it means that Allāh chose a prophet for all nations, and that there is no prophet for all nations except Muḥammad. As for the prophets who preceded him, they were sent specifically to their own peoples. Allāh did not send any prophet before him to all nations.

In this verse, there is also a clarification that Allāh decreed in His wisdom that Muḥammad would be a prophet while he was still in his mother’s womb. This corresponds to his saying: “I am my mother’s vision: she saw when she gave birth to me that a light issued from her, illuminating the palaces of Syria for her.” The saying: “before you were born I consecrated you”, means ‘I decreed and ordained that you would be a prophet.’ The phrase: “I have appointed you as a prophet to the nations”, means that Allāh chose him to be a prophet for all nations, not just for one single people. For this reason, we see people now entering Islam from all over the world.

The fact that Allāh spoke by this prophet (Muḥammad) through the tongue of the Prophet Jeremiah serves as a reminder of what is mentioned in Surah Āl ‘Imrān (Family of Imran). In this chapter, Allāh explains that He took a covenant from all the prophets, including Jeremiah, and that if the Prophet Muḥammad appears, they would believe in him. So they said, “We have affirmed.” and Allāh, Exalted be He, Says (what means): “And [recall, O People of the Scripture] when Allāh took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], ‘Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom and then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him.’ [Allāh] said, ‘Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?’ They said, ‘We have acknowledged it.’ He said, ‘Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.’” [Āl ‘Imrān (Family of Imran), 3:81].
