It came in the Book of Genesis also in chapter 16, that the angel appeared to Hājar (Hagar), the mother of Ishmael, and said to her:
8 - Hājar, servant of Sārah (Sarah), where have you come from and where are you going? She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarah.” 9 - The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 - The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” 11 - And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because the Lord has listened to your affliction. 12 - “And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. 15 - “Abraham (Ibrahim) called the name of his son whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.... 16 - “Abraham (Ibrahim) was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Ibrāhīm (Abraham). And similar to this is what came in the Book of Genesis in chapter 21, that the angel of Allāh said to Hagar, the wife of Abraham: 17 - “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for Allāh has heard the voice of the boy where he is. 18 - “Up! Lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”

Who else, from the descendants of Ishmael, has Allāh made into a great nation, other than Muḥammad?! Who is the one whose hand would be over everyone — to whom the peoples and nations would submit, every hand extended to him in submission — other than Muḥammad? His nation ruled the world from China to the Maghreb (the West), and people came to hold him in awe: they were either believers in him, or those at peace with him who paid the Jizyah (tribute) and submitted, or hypocrites within his ranks, or those who feared him.
As for the words “he will be a wild man,” the one intended is the Prophet Muḥammad, who said: “Allāh made me victorious through awe — striking fear into my enemies — over a distance of one month’s journey.” So the words of the Torah, “he will be a wild man,” apply to him: Allāh, Exalted be He, cast terror into the hearts of his enemies while he was still a month’s journey away from them.
The Ḥāfiz� and historian Ibn Kathīr, may Allāh have mercy on him, said in his book “The Beginning and the End”, in the biography of Ishmael ibn Abraham, peace be upon them both: “And this glad tiding only applied to his descendant Muḥammad (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him), for he is the one through whom the Arabs prevailed, and possessed all the lands east and west. And Allāh gave it [the nation] of beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds what no nation among the nations before them was given, and that is only due to the honor of its Messenger over the rest of the messengers, the blessing of his message, the auspiciousness of his glad tiding, his perfection in what he brought, and the universality of his mission to all the people of the earth.”
