“The woman (i.e., the Samaritan woman to the Messiah) saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.”

This is a clear indication of the transfer of the qiblah (direction of prayer) from Bayt Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) to the honored Ka‘bah which is in Makkah. For the Prophet Muḥammad used to pray facing Bayt Al-Maqdis, which was the place he faced in prayer, and he continued this for seventeen months until the saying of Allāh, Exalted be He, was revealed: {We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muḥammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Ḥarām. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer]. Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture well know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allāh is not unaware of what they do.} [Al-Baqarah (The Cow), 2:144]. At that time, the qiblah he faced in his prayer changed, and he turned toward the Ka‘bah in Makkah in obedience to his Lord’s command, as in this report about the Messiah: “the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.”
